Newsletter – January 2014

January 29, 2014

We hope you have all had a lovely Christmas with lots of festive fun and are still managing to keep to your new years’ resolutions. We wanted to take this opportunity to reflect on last year and let you know some of the news from our practice.

Staff & Team changes

Katy’s baby, Finlay, arrived safely in June and we can’t believe he’s already six months old, able to sit up and enjoy a Christmas dinner with all the trimmings!  Matthew loves being a big brother and is playing a key role in ensuring Finlay grows into a cheeky monkey!  Katy has discovered that looking after two boys is definitely more than twice the work of looking after one! She is back to her full time hours from January and is looking forward to catching up with her patients again

Suzanne sadly left us in September for a new challenge.  She is very happy in her new role and we enjoyed catching up with her at our Christmas party.  Louise joined us as our new practice manager in September and her enthusiasm and drive has been inspiring!  She has settled in really well and picked up the reins seamlessly, we’re delighted to have her as part of the team.

We have been lucky enough to employ Stephanie Brown as a permanent associate after her excellent work covering for Katy during her maternity leave. Her excellent care, friendly chairside manner and ethos of preventative dentistry means she’s a perfect fit for our practice and we are very pleased that she’s staying with us. Steph currently works on a Tuesday afternoon and evening.

With maternity leave to cover, and a few longer term illness’s to our staff this year we would like to thank our whole team for their additional efforts. They’ve all worked extremely hard to make sure that each shift is covered and that we’ve been able to continue to provide the highest level of care. We would also like to thank you, the patients, for being patient with us whilst we’ve had to adapt and move a few shifts around. Here’s hoping 2014 is an easier one in terms of changes to the rota!

Community

Over the last couple of months we have been going to local schools in Caversham to talk about oral health and discuss important issues such as brushing twice a day and which foods are good and bad for your teeth.  All children receive an age appropriate party/goody bag – no cake but free toothbrush, stickers, balloons etc.!  We hope to continue these this year as we feel it’s really important to educate children (and their parents) about oral health in a fun way.

We chose not to send Christmas cards to our patients and associates this year but instead made a donation to the NSPCC (National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children) in support of their Christmas Call for Help Appeal.  It is a very worthwhile cause, for more information please take a look at their website www.nspcc.org.uk

This football season we became proud new sponsors of Caversham AFC U9 Comets. The boys look great in their new kit (see the photo up in reception) and are having a great time training and playing each week. We’ll try and let you know how they’re getting on from time to time.

Please have a look at the community page of our website. We do like to help out and sponsor local people in events or fundraising, from charity 5ks to walking the Thames path, please do get in touch if you think we can help.

Winter Special Offer
You may have seen our Inman Aligner booklet in the waiting room? Inman Aligner is a fantastic removable appliance that can straighten your teeth in just a couple of months. It really is a great product and the feedback from patients has been very positive. From January we are offering all of our patients a free 15 minute consultation to discuss whether this treatment would be appropriate for you. The appliance costs from £1,500, please contact reception if you’re interested in a free consultation.

Assessments

We were inspected by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) in June with the assessor looking at all parts of our practice. This included inspecting areas such as our cross infection control, practice policies and patient safety & satisfaction. We were delighted to comfortably pass in all areas. The CQC has required a lot of additional work so it was great news that all of our hard work has paid off.

We were also assessed, and again awarded the Denplan Excel accreditation in December. Denplan Excel is the only independently validated Clinical Governance Accreditation programme recognised by the British Dental Health Foundation. It’s reassuring to know that we’re continuing to achieve this additional level of patient care.

Wishing you a Happy New Year from all at Caversham Heights Dental Practice.
