Teledentistry is the new buzz word in dentistry. It refers to consultations and appointments performed remotely using video call software such as Zoom or FaceTime.
Clearly, a video call is no substitute for seeing a dentist in person and the extent to which they can see your mouth and assess your teeth is much reduced. We would always recommend seeing a dentist in person and a Teledentistry appointment is not a substitute for a face to face appointment. However, for some people in certain scenarios it’s a useful addition to their regular dental care treatment.

Teledentistry may be appropriate because you don’t feel able to attend the practice, perhaps because you’re classified as vulnerable, have Covid-19 symptoms or because you’re not in the area.

Examples of areas where patients may wish to have a teledentistry appointment could be:

You’ve got an emergency but can’t attend the practice.
You’ve noticed that your gums are bleeding more
You’ve just chipped a tooth
You’ve lost a filling
Your wisdom tooth has become painful
You are concerned about grinding your teeth
You haven’t been to the dentist for a while and wanted to understand how your overall mouth health is and what they could do to improve it.
You are thinking about straightening / whitening / improving your smile and want to know your options.

More about Teledentistry

Teledentistry will be charged as per normal appointments (but are included within the Denplan Care plan) to be paid over the phone. Whilst the call itself may not be as long as a typical appointment, the dentist still needs to asses the situation ahead of the call, and then follow up after the call, updating notes, and potentially planning treatment and prescribing antibiotics etc.

If you would like a Teledentistry appointment please contact our Reception Team to book.

Ahead of the appointment please email us a description of the issue, along with your name and date of birth. Please also inlcude at least 3 still photos. These should be:

Straight on view of your closed mouth, include nose and chin area. You
Straight on view of your mouth slightly open, trying to show your teeth. Again, including nose and chin area.
If there is a problem tooth or area, close up pictures of it would be beneficial too.
